Art & Music

THS A 088

It is our belief the arts provide knowledge, skill and sensitivity needed to deal with the complexities of the world and are a valuable component in the educational process of fostering a compassionate school community and in developing responsible young citizens: therefore, all THS students participate in a robust music and fine arts program.

Performing Arts
The main focus of THS’s music program is to introduce all students to the love and enjoyment of music with the hope of instilling a life-long desire to continue to grow musically.

Students learn the main musical elements of music history and theory.  This includes melody, rhythm, form, harmony, and tone color.   The Kodály concept of teaching music is implemented with all kindergarten through fifth-grade students.  Kodály is an experience-based approach to teaching music that recognizes the voice as the most natural instrument and one which every person possesses; therefore, learning through singing precedes instrumental training.  Using the Orff Schulwerk method, instruments are introduced beginning with the use of xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels as well as other percussion instruments.  Students in grades 6-8 elect to participate in Beginning Band or Chorus.

Yearly music program highlights include an all-school Winter Celebration held in December, a spring musical in March, and an end-of-year music showcase assembly. This year’s spring musical is James and the Giant Peach.

Fine Arts

The art program at THS has three main goals.  The first is to encourage our students to express themselves creatively within the context of specific projects.  The second goal is to expose our students to a wide variety of materials, techniques, and disciplines.  The third goal is to introduce artist’s works from geographically and ethnically diverse groups and provide students with a sense of the history of art within the context of their own artwork.
